Resonance in Dialogue! Rotating CEO Yu Liguo of BEWG Attended the Theme Forum of Carbon Neutrality 2021-11-04
Recently, the 16th 21st Century Annual Finance Summit of Asia was held in Beijing. Yu Liguo, Rotating CEO of BEWG was invited to attend it; he introduced BEWG’s green transformation development under the objective of “double carbon” in the dialogue entitled Development off the Low-carbon Industry and Support for Green Finance. Yu Liguo indicated that the “3060” objective had a huge influence on the water industry; the industry would boast a bigger carbon reduction space in the case where the conversion efficiency of clean energy in the future would be improved.
The total quantity of BEWG’s sewage treatment tops the country. It can be deemed as the main force of carbon emission. Meanwhile, as the leading enterprise of the water industry, BEWG deeply understood the correlation between its business and China’s carbon emission objective. Yu Liguo expressed that after the goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality was proposed, BEWG rapidly adapted to the policy change and dedicated itself to leading the new trend of the industry’s carbon emission and low-carbon transformation, and undertaking more carbon emission responsibilities; it also carried out the carbon emission practice and exploratory development in multiple aspects.
This year, BEWG established the exclusive subject research group to formulate the carbon emission reduction plan more scientifically. According to the research results, for the water treatment industry where BEWG is, the energy consumption influence of carbon emission reduction is around 1-2%. According to the proportion, the carbon emission reduction pressure of the water treatment industry is relatively low. However, Yu Liguo held that the goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality had “a great indirect influence” on the industry. According to the calculation, through the cross-industry coordination, the water industry may achieve social responsibilities in four dimensions, namely point, line, surface and body, and further explore the carbon reduction emission potential of 8-12%.
“The goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality highly keeps in line with BEWG’s current working orientation”, said Yu Liguo, “the main orientation of both the policy and the enterprise is to reduce costs and improve efficiency.”
For the water industry, one of its costs comes from electricity. According to Yu Liguo, as to the carbon emission reduction measures of BEWG, on the one hand, it reduces energy cost through technical innovation; on the other hand, it has arranged distributive photovoltaic equipment in over 50 sewage treatment plants through BEWG Clean Energy Company that has been operated for years; it provides electricity for sewage treatment plants through the photovoltaic clean energy.
“Photovoltaic may supply around 40% power for sewage treatment plants, which is our orientation of carbon emission reduction. We believe that with the gradual in-depth of the goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, the energy supply proportion of BEWG Clean Energy will continue to be improved”, said Yu Liguo.
At present, BEWG is trying to replace traditional energies with Ground Source Heat Pump and Water Source Heat Pump in many projects. With the Western Sewage Treatment Factory in the Waterfront Area of Qinhuangdao as the example, it takes the reclaimed water disposed from sewage as the heat source of Water Source Heat Pump to provide heating and refrigeration guarantee for office buildings, production and living areas in the factory. In the field of carbon sink, BEWG is trying orientations like recycling of reclaimed water, resource recycling and sludge utilization.
BEWG is also exploring new modes of water supply, sewage and garbage treatment in villages. From solving rural water supply and drainage to constructing rural environmental infrastructure to making an overall arrangement of biomass energy, garbage, water supply and drainage, environmental sanitation and clean energy, it helps govern and improve the rural living environment, and contributes its professional strength to rural revitalization.
Under the goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, various industries are accelerating the green and low-carbon transformation, thus bringing out enormous capital demands; green finance also becomes the huge impetus in the process of enterprises’ green development and transformation process. He indicated that in the context of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, the water industry in China contains the trillion-level investment opportunities in the future. In order to realize benign and sustainable development, the huge green financial market needs the “organic” combination and joint participation of multiple parties.

The sustainable green finance will make the capital party gain returns and enterprises gain capital. In this process, we need the research and participation of the government. With the coordination of multiple parties, there will be more innovative products similar to REITs in the future green finance industry, so as to support the industry to develop from the vein mode towards a better, healthier and sustainable orientation”, said Yu Liguo.
Carbon peaking and carbon neutrality are new orientations, new subjects and new forces of the industry, so many orientations need to be jointly explored and practiced by the whole industry. BEWG is willing to work with all environmental enterprises, contribute the strength to pollution governance, carbon emission and coordinated development. It will integrate the “green first” idea into various scenarios of space, ecology, resource and life, optimize the existing economic system and truly form the high-quality development pattern.
