Low-carbon tool is coming! BEWG successfully realizes the first 10,000-ton project application of AOA technology 2022-03-16

During the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, China’s ecological civilization construction entered a critical period of taking carbon reduction as the key strategic direction, promoting the synergy of pollution reduction and carbon reduction, promoting the comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development, and realizing the improvement of ecological environment quality from quantitative change to qualitative change. This year’s government work report stressed that the dominant position of enterprises in innovation shall be strengthened, key core technology research shall be continuously promoted, and the integration of industry-university-research-application shall be deepened. The research and development, promotion and application of green and low-carbon technologies shall be promoted to build a green manufacturing and service system.

The water industry is the basic industry for economic development and guarantee of people’s livelihood. Low-carbon development, quality improvement and efficiency increase are extremely urgent. As a flagship enterprise focusing on the recycling of water resources and the protection of water ecological environment, BEWG has been upholding the operation philosophy of “customer-sourced and innovation-oriented” for many years, actively integrating resources and forces of all parties, increasing scientific research investment, and successively producing new technologies and promoting their application to promote high-quality development of the environmental industry. Among them, the sludge double reflux--AOA deep nitrogen and phosphorus removal technology (hereinafter referred to as “BEAOA new technology”) in cooperation with academician Peng Yongzhen of the Chinese Academy of Engineering has made a major breakthrough, and has had large-scale production in Shandong, Guangdong and other places, showing excellent technical advantages. 

Working with the academician team to promote the transformation of scientific and technological achievements

As we all know, activated sludge process is the core technology used in the water treatment industry for nearly a century. Among them, the most widely used pre-denitrification technology (such as A2/O, A/O and oxidation ditch) is limited by the threshold of internal reflux ratio, and the efficient and economic deep removal of total nitrogen is an industry problem. 

In 2011, after discovering the special phenomenon of short-range denitrification, academician Peng Yongzhen’s team carried out mechanism research for more than 10 years, and finally achieved a technological breakthrough and established relevant theories for the first time in the world. In 2015, academician Peng Yongzhen’s team developed the sludge double reflux--AOA process technology for the first time at home and abroad. This technology can make full use of the organic matter in raw water, and has the advantages of high-efficiency denitrification and energy saving. In the follow-up study of sewage treatment, short-range denitrification coupled with anaerobic ammonia oxidation combined with AOA technology was proposed, which shortens the reaction path of biological denitrification, greatly improves the denitrification efficiency, and meanwhile reduces the consumption of organic carbon sources.

“As scientific and technological workers in the field of environmental protection, we should uphold innovation, strive to solve the “neck” problem of national economic and social development, improve the transformation and application of scientific and technological achievements, and make China’s sewage treatment technology from follow-up, parallel to lead.”, academician Peng Yongzhen once said in an interview with the media. 

BEWG has the same pursuit as academician Peng Yongzhen, it actively built an academician workstation with academician Peng Yongzhen in 2017, and invested a lot of scientific and technological resources for the transformation of scientific and technological achievements with its own advantages. Through the phased project management of the verification process, the R&D efficiency was greatly improved, quickly achieving a major breakthrough in production and application.

Overcoming the difficulties in new technologies application and laying a solid foundation for engineering

In order to overcome the difficulties in the application of BEAOA new technology from laboratory to practical engineering, BEWG established the first 100-ton pilot plant test at home and abroad in Haikou based on a large number of research and verification. Meanwhile, based on the first generation product prototype and the formed systematic start-up control strategy technology, BEWG quickly started the 10,000-ton production verification in 2020, further breaking through the bottleneck of the 10,000-ton conversion application of the first generation products of BEAOA process, and created a record of low-temperature nitrogen removal in winter far beyond expectations. 

Through the severe tests of different water quality environment and different climatic conditions in the north and south, BEAOA new technology has accumulated a lot of experience in long-term stable operation, and established an operation strategy based on parameter and process control, laying a solid foundation for the subsequent wide application of this technology in new construction or upgrading projects.

Under the background of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, realizing the collaborative treatment of pollution reduction and carbon reduction will be the main technical improvement direction of sewage treatment. BEAOA new technology is featured with good effluent effect and stable water quality. At the same time, it can efficiently recycle the carbon source in the sludge, which not only saves the reagent cost, but also reduces the aeration volume of biochemical treatment, achieving the dual effects of nitrogen & phosphorus removal and energy conservation and emission reduction. In addition, the application of BEAOA new technology will also effectively reduce sludge production, solve the “pain of sludge” from the source, further reduce carbon emissions in the whole life cycle of sewage treatment, and improve water treatment efficiency, thereby becoming a strong support for the sewage treatment plant to achieve the goal of “carbon neutrality”. 

General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out that to break through the bottleneck of self-development and solve deep-seated contradictions and problems, innovation is the fundamental way out, and the key depends on scientific and technological forces. Scientific and technological innovation plays a fundamental and strategic supporting role in ecological civilization construction. In the future, BEWG will continue to strengthen scientific and technological innovation in the ecological environment, and cooperate with industry experts and upstream and downstream enterprises to promote the transformation of scientific and technological innovation achievements, launch innovative technological products and sustainable development solutions, promote the construction of green industrial chain, and thoroughly fight the battle of water pollution prevention and control, so as to help China achieve the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals on schedule.
