CCTV News | Recycled Water Back in Service: The Spectacular Transformation of BEWG Yuhang Wastewater Treatment Plant Phase IV 2026-05-14
On May 14, China Media Group aired a news report themed “Recycled Water Accelerates Re-utilization”, vividly demonstrating how recycled water plants are transformed from conventional pollution treatment facilities into urban ecological complexes.
Within this green transition, BEWG Yuhang Wastewater Treatment Plant Phase IV stands out as a model benchmark featuring “underground pollution treatment plus above-ground green space”. It showcases innovative practices of deep integration of wastewater treatment, urban renewal and ecological landscape construction.
Underground Plant + Overground Park, Ecological Leadership
Located in the core area of Hangzhou Future Sci-Tech City, Yuhang Phase IV greets visitors not with industrial facilities typical of wastewater plants, but Yushang Ecological Park filled with birdsong and blossoms. As a fully underground double-layer covered wastewater treatment plant, the project completely changes the public’s stereotyped perception of sewage plants. Adopting the advanced “underground plant + overground park” construction model, it houses all water treatment structures with a daily treatment capacity of 150,000 cubic meters underground. Above ground, an ecological park covering approximately 52,000 square meters is built.
This compound utilization of vertical space realizes virtually no net land occupation for wastewater treatment facilities, effectively isolates noise and dust pollution, and converts NIMBY facilities into a neighborhood-friendly urban lounge for residents in surrounding communities to relax, exercise and get close to nature, greatly improving the quality of regional living environment.
Technological Innovation for Carbon Reduction and Efficiency Gain
The remarkable transformation of Yuhang Wastewater Treatment Plant Phase IV lies not only in its improved landscape, but also in its core green and low-carbon technological upgrades. In terms of recycled water recycling, the project has established a sound integrated plant-network-river governance system. High-quality recycled water is used for ecological replenishment of Yuhangtang River, with an annual water recharge volume of 50 million cubic meters. This measure has greatly improved the watershed aquatic ecological environment, lifting the downstream river water quality from former inferior Grade V to Grade III standard.
In energy conservation and emission reduction, the project integrates multiple carbon reduction technologies including photovoltaic power generation, sewage-source heat pumps and biological carbon sequestration. Supported by refined intelligent management and control, its power consumption per ton of water is nearly 40% lower than the average level of similar underground wastewater plants adopting the MBR process. With outstanding green and low-carbon performance, Yuhang Wastewater Treatment Plant Phase IV was selected into the first batch of national green and low-carbon benchmark wastewater treatment plants by NDRC and MOHURD, and it is the only selected project in Zhejiang Province.
Smart Water Management to Build Industrial Benchmark
Rooted in the tech hub of the Hangzhou West Science and Technology Innovation Corridor, the project leverages the group’s self-developed smart control center and digital twin control system to build a nationally leading smart water plant integrating digital twin, simulation and intelligent identification. Equipped with precise aeration and chemical dosing systems, the plant realizes on-demand air supply and dynamically adjusted chemical dosing. While ensuring stable and compliant effluent quality, it effectively cuts energy and chemical consumption. It has been recognized as a “Double-Hundred Leap” benchmark leading wastewater treatment plant for its smart operation.
The successful practice of Yuhang Wastewater Treatment Plant Phase IV vividly illustrates the transformation of environmental infrastructure from a mere pollution treatment function to a creator of ecological value. The special coverage by CCTV News not only demonstrates BEWG’s dedicated practices and benchmark achievements in implementing sustainable development concepts, but also creates a replicable and promotable demonstration paradigm for modern cities to tackle intensive land use and achieve environmental-friendly and coordinated development. BEWG will continue to deepen water resource recycling and holistic collaborative governance, take technological innovation as the core driving force, and help elevate the construction of Beautiful China to a new level.
