Yinchuan Water Park Named National Model for Child-Friendly Spaces 2025-06-18

Recently, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MOHURD), the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), and the Office of the State Council Working Committee on Women and Children (OSCWCC) announced the second list of replicable best practices for developing child-friendly urban spaces. The Water Conservation Theme Park at the Yinchuan First Reclaimed Water Plant, operated by BEWG, was successfully selected for this list due to its innovative "Park+" ecological empowerment model.
The Yinchuan First Reclaimed Water Plant has a designed capacity of 300,000 tons per day. It utilizes an "AAO + Efficient Sedimentation Tank + V-type Sand Filter" process, producing effluent that meets the quasi-Class IV surface water quality standard. Embodying a design philosophy of green, smart, innovative, and shared principles, the plant features a semi-underground structure with an open, multi-level park built above ground. As Ningxia's first garden-style reclaimed water plant, it is a modern water resource complex that integrates wastewater treatment, reclaimed water reuse, Party building education, water technology exhibitions, and a base for water culture传承 (inheritance) and科普教育 (popular science education).
By developing the Water Conservation Theme Park around the water plant, Yinchuan is promoting the adaptation of park green spaces to be child-friendly. Centered on an integrated "Plant-Park-Museum" design concept, the park includes an indoor exhibition hall, a production process observation area, and an open ecological park. It features multiple age-specific children's activity areas, incorporating elements such as rain gardens, hydrophilic platforms, interactive hydraulic installations, and non-motorized play facilities. This design caters to children's educational and recreational needs, creating a composite child-friendly space that combines ecological landscaping, popular science education, interactive experiences, and play areas. This initiative explores a sustainable model for merging the green transformation of municipal infrastructure with spaces dedicated to children's development.
BEWG continues to summarize and promote the experience gained from developing the Water Conservation Theme Park. It aims to expand the reach and enrich the services of child-friendly spaces, further promote child-adapted renovations, and contribute to writing a new chapter in Yinchuan's efforts to become a child-friendly city.
